Bacon calls order on top class lambs

The Diss Express' regular columnist Richard Bacon, MP for South Norfolk, shows he is as happy turning his hand to judging butchers' lambs as he is helping to tackle Diss' ongoing vandalism problem.

I was cautious when Diss Stockmen's Club challenged me to judge a breed of Whitefaced Woodland sheep.

The task was to put four lambs into the order which would produce the best butchers’ lamb. Master Judge Martin Wilby gave useful tips to all competitors, such as how to look for sheep with the most meat in the expensive areas.

His list matched my own, making me a surprised but delighted winner. Following this unexpected triumph, I was asked to present trophies to the winners in the Whitefaced Woodland Sheep category at the Royal Norfolk Show last week and this was a real pleasure. I know how dedicated the breeders are to be preserving this wonderful breed.

Crime stopper

I met Inspector Gina Hopkinson at Diss police station recently to discuss rising levels of crime and vandalism in Diss. Insp Hopkinson grew up in Diss and I’m sure knowing the area backwards will help her in controlling these problems.

Some continuity of personnel is welcome too - she is the fourth inspector at Diss police station in two years. The other day I was told about a farmer whose five-bar gate had been stolen. He reported the theft to the police. The first question asked by the officer sent to investigate was: ‛Do you need any counselling?’ The farmer replied: ‛No, the gate wasn't a personal friend of mine!’ The police often seem trapped in a web of political correctness and form-filling. We have to allow them to get on with fighting crime.

Top for recycling

Did you know Norfolk is one of the leading counties for recycling domestic waste? That’s good for the planet and great for the local economy.

A new £6 million recycling plant has opened at Costessey. Norfolk Environmental Waste Services (NEWS) uses the

latest technology to sort recyclable waste taken from doorstep collections.

Several district councils take part, including South Norfolk. I visited the plant with County Councillor Ron Johnson, who is a great champion of recycling and the county's board member at the plant. The scheme relies on householders pre-sorting their rubbish. It may be a bit of a chore but I'm all for helping to reduce the county's waste problem - and the NEWS plant is certainly doing that.
