Dedication is the key to success

In this month's column, South Norfolk MP Richard Bacon discovers the secret of the team that gives sound advice.free web page hit counter

I SAW a fine example of serving one another when visiting Diss and District Citizens Advice Bureau to meet manager Penny Pullinger and her staff.

The CAB helps people with a wide range of issues. This could mean advice on what to do if a shop won't take back faulty goods. It may also mean counselling for people who need a helping hand to sort out debt problems.

The CAB has expertise in helping those who have got into debt and may even be able to negotiate with the loan company or bank for you. Call 01379 651333 for more details.

The secret of the CAB's success is a dedicated team of 20 trained volunteers who provide a tremendous service to our community.

Although Norfolk County Council offers some funding, the CAB. is actually a charity. To help with funds there will be a Jazz in the Garden party on Sunday, July 18 in Pulham St Mary with a New Orleans-style jazz band, a hog roast and the superb, locally-brewed Buffy's real ale. Sounds great fun!

You can phone the CAB on 01379 642291 for details.

Remembering the brave

ANNIVERSARY SERVICE: Richard

The commemoration of the 60th Anniversary of D-Day on Sunday was a wonderful tribute to the brave men and women whose heroic efforts saved the modern world from its blackest hour and restored freedom to millions across Europe.

I attended the events in Diss organised by the Royal British Legion to mark the special day. Following a splendid parade by our local veterans along Mere Street, there was an outdoor service of remembrance and thanksgiving at the park pavilion next to the mere.

It was a lovely ecumenical occasion. The Salvation Army Band played as we sang some of the finest hymns in the canon.

The bible readings were most fitting for the day, including the supremely apt "Let us now praise famous men", the Sermon on the Mount and the famous passage from John ch 15: "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."

The Rev Reginald Dakin, secretary of the Diss and District Royal British Legion. emphasised the crucial point: the sacrifices which those brave people made have placed a responsibility on all of us. It is by serving one another that we best show how we cherish the freedom and civilisation which were so dearly won.

We shall remember them.
