Doctors work in cramped spaces

In the latest of his constituency news features Diss Express columnist and South Norfolk MP Richard Bacon casts his eye over more local issues

THE fuss over possible delays to the new Diss medical centre highlights how Diss has grown in recent years.

Local doctors are working in cramped conditions with too many people on their books. Developers are due to start work on the new centre in January 2005. I have contacted the local primary care trust and asked for an early assurance that there will not be a delay, which would be quite unacceptable for local people.

In The News

Hot off the press is my latest South Norfolk Report. This allows me to report back to local people on the many different things I do on behalf of everyone in South Norfolk both here in the constituency and in Westminster. It includes details  about  visits  I've  made
Richard (centre) with Bounty's

to schools, as well as employers such as Bounty in Diss and also campaigns on issues which affect everyone, such as road traffic safety and better food labelling.

Copies are being delivered to each household in the weeks ahead. If you don't receive your copy during the next month, then phone 01379 - 642769 and one will be sent to you.

Me and my shadow

David Lawrence, the head of Easton College, and I are volunteering as 'guinea pigs' for a new national work shadowing scheme arranged by the Association of Colleges.

The scheme will help us understand each other's jobs and show how Parliament and colleges can work together.

Recently David visited one of the surgery sessions I hold at my office in Diss.

Local people come to see me about a wide range of problems, including everything from child support and schools to transport and health services. David discovered that some of the issues we deal with are very similar, such as funding for students.

I have also welcomed David to the House of Commons where he listened to Prime Minister’s Questions.

He then attended a Public Accounts Committee hearing when we asked NHS boss Sir Nigel Crisp to explain what the health service is doing about dirty hospitals.

This is a major problem which leads to the spreading of many infections.

Too often, people who go into hospital for one problem come out with another.

I will be visiting Easton College again later in the year when I shall get the chance to meet managers, staff and students to see how David runs a very large and successful college of further education.
