MP welcomes minister's pledge on key report

debate into the case of Sarah Lynch, who was left brain damaged following a lifesaving cardiopulmonary bypass at the hospital in 1983. The independent report, compiled by Dr Dominic Bell, Consultant in Intensive Care and Anaesthesia at Leeds General Infirmary, was highly critical of the Royal Brompton's conduct before, during and after Sarah's operation. However, the hospital attempted to pressurise Dr Bell into altering his findings and then ignored the report once it was published. During the debate, which was watched by Sarah's parents, Mike and Sally Lynch, the minister agreed that a resolution should be possible and undertook to study the report in full, saying the Trust would find it helpful to do the same. Mr Bacon said today: “I am most grateful to the minister for a constructive debate, and I am pleased that she has promised to study Dr Bell's report into Sarah's treatment at the Royal Brompton hospital”. “I also hope the Trust will follow the minister's advice and examine the Bell report carefully. Perhaps then the hospital and the Lynch family can reach the resolution that the minister felt should be possible”.
