South Norfolk MP Richard Bacon joined fellow Norfolk MPs on a visit to RAF Marham at the invitation of the Station Commander, Group Captain ‘Rocky’ Rochelle.

RAF Marham is the largest and busiest combat aircraft station in the Royal Air Force, operating four Squadrons of Tornado GR4 fighter-bomber aircraft in the attack and reconnaissance roles.

The MPs were given a brief overview of the day to day Operations of the largest front line Station in the United Kingdom, the role of the Tornado GR4 fighter-bombers based at Marham and the vital capabilities the Tornados are providing in Afghanistan. The MPs also visited the Tornado Depth Maintenance Hub, which provides in-depth engineering support to the Tornado Ground Reconnaissance Force.

Also on the tour was a visit to 31 Squadron, who returned from Operations in Afghanistan in February.  Squadron Leader Gaz Littlechild highlighted the capabilities of the Tornado and gave the MPs an opportunity to sit in the aircraft and have a pilot’s view!

Mr Bacon said: “This is a great opportunity for us to see some of the Station and meet some of its personnel.    Group Captain Rochelle and his team do an amazing job and we should all be very proud of them.

“Many of the RAF Marham aircrew are shortly to deploy to Afghanistan, where they will be supporting NATO forces in battle against the Taliban. I wish them all Godspeed”.
