The peace of Thorpe Abbots (whose church is pictured above) looks to have been preserved as plans to hold Autograss races on a nearby field have been dropped |
SOUTH NORFOLK MP Richard Bacon has welcomed the announcement by Diss Autograss Racing Club that, following protests from local residents, the club has scrapped plans to hold an Autograss race meeting at Thorpe Abbotts, near Diss (pictured, left) on Sunday 26 March 2006. anyone thought the people of Thorpe Abbotts would not object to motor racing practically at the bottom of their gardens”. “While there is a place for amateur motor racing and it is something many people enjoy, it is important to do it in places which minimise inconvenience to others. It is also important to observe the advice of the National Autograss Sport Association”. “Following the many representations I received from residents of Thorpe Abbotts and surrounding villages, I raised this matter with South Norfolk District Council and with the police. It seemed that little could be done to stop at least the first meet from going ahead, so I am delighted that common sense appears to have prevailed. However, I fear the residents of Thorpe Abbotts will remain sceptical until the 26th of March – which is Mothering Sunday – passes off peacefully”.
