MP calls on councils to fly the green flag

The Green Flag Award scheme began in 1996 as a way of recognising and rewarding the best urban green spaces. Like the Blue Flag for beaches, the aim of the Green Flag scheme is to encourage others to achieve the same high environmental standards and set a benchmark for green spaces across England. The Eastern region has only seven Green Flag parks, compared to 14 in South West England and 13 in the South East, and compared to 84 in the more urban North West and 52 in London. Mr Bacon, a member of the Commons public accounts committee, said: “Simply because the East of England is a rural region, this does not mean that my constituents in urban areas should not have access to parks and green spaces near to where they live. The same can be said for residents in Norwich, Ipswich and Cambridge”. “Local authorities should embrace schemes like the Green Flag Award as a way to boost the profile of urban green spaces, encourage more residents to visit them and get local groups involved in upkeep.
