SOUTH NORFOLK MP Richard Bacon has called on Norfolk County Council to implement a promised 20 mph speed limit outside Morley CE Primary School, near Wymondham, after visiting the school to see the situation at first hand.

Headteacher Peter Clough and Chair of Governors Stuart Shortman showed Mr Bacon how traffic waiting to enter the small school car park regularly queues on a narrow stretch of Deopham Road, where the speed limit is 60 mph.  

One teacher at the school has already been involved in a traffic accident while waiting to enter the school car park.

Mr Bacon said:

“One accident is one too many and Morley Primary School has been waiting too long for action.  Since the County Council agreed in 2004 that the speed limit should be reduced, there has been an unreasonable delay in doing something about it”.

“I have contacted County Hall and asked the Transportation Department to set a firm date for the implementation of a 20 mph speed limit outside the school.  Once the speed limit has been reduced, it will need to be enforced.  I have therefore asked Norfolk police to help because, in my experience, the best placed person to enforce speed limits outside schools is the local beat police officer.  Contrary to what officials will sometimes say, local police officers are very willing to help, particularly where schoolchildren are concerned”.
