MP wants action on flood danger

South Norfolk MP Richard Bacon has written to Environment Agency bosses calling on them to desilt a heavily clogged-up river before it floods, threatening homes and potentially cutting the A140, the main arterial road between Norwich and Ipswich.

Mr Bacon took action after visiting Newton Flotman to see the state of the river for himself. The river has become heavily silted both up and down stream and at the bridge which carries the A140 over the river. So far, the Environment Agency has told local residents it is only planning some ‘limited desilting’ in November.

Mr Bacon said today: “The Environment Agency’s response is simply inadequate. If there were a flood, the potential damage to local property would be severe. What’s more, with over 21,000 cars per day using the A140, the local economy would be seriously damaged if flooding closed the road”.

“If we are to avoid the serious flooding that recently hit Great Yarmouth then the Environment Agency must take this threat more seriously. The river needs to be thoroughly desilted and I have asked the Environment Agency to act quickly”.
