South Norfolk MP Richard Bacon visited the Norfolk Feather Company in Diss to discuss how EU regulations have forced Managing Director Mike Whittemore to reassess his manufacturing and employment plans. Although the company used high standard equipment for washing feathers, strict EU rules made continuing the process too expensive. The |

company found itself unable to compete against other EU countries such as Spain and France who flout the regulations.
Mr Bacon said: “It is a sad reflection that a successful company such as Norfolk Feather finds it difficult to compete against European manufacturers. As usual, we toe the line but our European counterparts flout the rules and get away with it”. Norfolk Feather has overcome the problem by investing in greater production of pillows and cushion pads for many own brand labels such as Harrods and Conran. By investing in modern equipment, the company can offer a fast delivery of finished products which foreign competitors are unable to match. Mr Bacon said: “I was very impressed with the set up at Norfolk Feather. Mike Whittemore has vast experience in the feather industry. He is putting it to good use here in South Norfolk and employing over 30 people. It is excellent to see a local business investing in new production facilities and finding new markets”.
