SOUTH NORFOLK MP Richard Bacon has said that the case for merging Norfolk Constabulary with the Suffolk and Cambridgeshire forces has yet to be made.

Mr Bacon made the statement after Prime Minister Tony Blair pledged to the commons that the proposed changes would not be forced through.


Mr Bacon said: 

"The police may need to make changes in order to remain efficient. But the case has not been made out for a large scale merger of Norfolk with other counties such as Suffolk and Cambridgeshire."

"This merger could cost £80 million to £90 million to implement and while the costs would be real, experience shows that the benefits and 'savings' from such organisational changes are frequently not realised".

"Too often it is a case of 'Pay more, get less'. What local people want is to see more police in our towns and villages, not huge managerial changes which hit council taxpayers in the pocket".
