South Norfolk MP Richard Bacon was written to ministers at the Department of Trade and Industry, calling on them to launch an investigation into EDF Energy, after Diss was hit by another major power failure.

The town of Diss, where Mr Bacon has his constituency office, was plunged into darkness yet again at around 4:30pm, leaving 2,000 properties are without an electricity supply.

Many businesses, shops and offices in the town have also been affected.

A similar major power failure happened just over a month ago in Diss when the whole town was left without electricity for much of the day, in some cases for more than 18 hours.

Mr Bacon said today: "Some employers on the Diss industrial estate are telling me that they have been affected by power failures 10 to 12 times this year. This affects production and sales and threatens local jobs. In addition, expensive machine tools are damaged when there are sudden power cuts, leading to more expense and delays.

"I have called on the DTI to launch an investigation into EDF Energy's performance as an electricity supplier, since I think it is highly likely that this company is failing to meet its statutory obligations".
