The implementation of the Planning Act 2008

THE PLANNING ACT was given Royal Assent in November 2008.  Under the Act, future major infrastructure projects of national importance will require a new type of “development consent” instead of consent under planning acts and other legislation.

Ultimately, that consent will be decided by a panel of independent commissioners on the basis of National Policy Statements. These Statements will be published in draft for consultation and go through a Parliamentary procedure, involving scrutiny by a Select Committee.

You can find out more about how the Planning Act 2008 will be implemented in this note from the House of Commons Library.  If you have any questions about this note, please contact me.
