their debate. These videos are judged by MPs, with awards given to national winners and heat winners. Students have the chance to address topical issues such as smoking in public places, ID cards and anti-terrorist legislation, encouraging political engagement, as well as developing key skills such as communication, enquiry, participation and responsibility. Mr Bacon said “It is vital that young people today have an understanding of the democratic process and how the country is run. This active learning competition gives them an opportunity to tackle issues that are fundamental to their everyday lives”. National winners will be invited to a reception at Westminster on 12th July next year, and in past years have also had tea at 10 Downing Street. The deadline for teams from schools and youth groups to register for the competition is 15th December 2005. Details on how to enter can be found at www.citizenshipfoundation.org.uk/nypc or by contacting Rebecca Galbraith at the Citizenship Foundation on 0207 566 4157 or by email at nypc@citizenshipfoundation.org.uk.
