The Building Schools for the Future
programme employs 111 staff who have an average salary of £85,000 |
Commenting on the National Audit Office report on renewing the secondary school estate through the Building Schools for the Future programme, South Norfolk MP Richard Bacon, a member of the Commons public accounts committee, said:
“It is hard to believe that the Department for Children, Schools and Families is sitting on a capital underspend of £2.4 billion.” |

“This has accumulated due to ongoing delays in the Building Schools for the Future programme. This programme employs 111 staff with an average salary of £85,000 but they don’t seem able to drive forward the building programme with the urgency required. There is no excuse for this.” “Many schools need new buildings and facilities. I have met inspirational headteachers in my own constituency who simply rolled up their sleeves and made it happen. Instead, we have this large bureaucracy that is way behind schedule. It might be better to put a group of talented headteachers in charge of the money and let them get on with it.”
