Richard supported a private member's bill to give householders who confront intruders legal protection SOUTH NORFOLK MP Richard Bacon was one of many Conservative MPs who supported the private member's Bill introduced by Patrick Mercer MP to give legal protection to householders who confront an intruder who breaks into their house.

Speaking in the Commons Mr Bacon said: "The presumption should be that a householder is  acting within the law in defending his family and property".

"People should not face the risk of prosecution or a drawn-out investigation. The balance has shifted too far in favour of those committing crimes. At the moment many burglars regard their crimes as almost a risk-free activity".

"The proposed change in the law shifts the balance back in favour of the householders".
