Commenting on the publication of the Ministry of Defence’s 2008-09 resource accounts, South Norfolk MP Richard Bacon, a member of the Commons public accounts committee, said:

“The MoD’s annual stock-check of assets including tanks and rifles has revealed a massive jump in the number of discrepancies being reported, with £1,077 million of discrepancies detected in 2009, up from £396 million in 2008.”

According to its 2008-09 resource
accounts, the Ministry of Defence
'cannot account' for BOWMAN
communications assets worth
 £155 million

“What’s more, the MoD cannot account for £155 million worth of top-secret BOWMAN tactical communications gear, currently in use in Afghanistan.”

“Asset tracking has been a perennial problem for the MoD, but we are not talking about missing boxes of paperclips.  These discrepancies are over combat radios and tanks and trucks and guns.  The MoD is fighting a war and needs to do much better than this.”
