MP calls for investigation into MPs expenses

Richard Bacon MP has asked Sir John
Bourn at the National Audit Office
 to examine how MPs' expenses
are recorded

SOUTH NORFOLK MP Richard Bacon has called for an investigation into how MP's expenses are recorded, after figures released to the media incorrectly stated that Mr Bacon claimed £5,685 for taxi travel and car hire.

Mr Bacon said:

“This figure is ludicrous. I have not claimed £5,685 for taxis or anything near this figure. My estimate is that I have spent a few hundred pounds on taxis over the last six years since I was first elected”.

“Nor have I hired a car at all in the last 12 months”.

“The figures also state, wrongly, that I have claimed no petrol allowance for mileage, which I certainly have done”.

“As a result of these inaccurate reports, this morning I have spoken to Sir John Bourn at the National Audit Office and asked him to examine the methods for recording details of MPs expenses, which appear to be deeply flawed”.

“I am strongly in favour of transparency in these areas. As a member of the Commons public accounts committee I think taxpayers have the right to know how their money is used”.

“I applaud Norman Baker MP's efforts to secure greater disclosure. I would also like any published figures to be accurate”.
