South Norfolk MP Richard Bacon has said that the body which  decommissions nuclear power stations must keep a closer eye on costs.

Mr Bacon said: “The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority has contracts with licensed operators who manage the decommissioning at each site.

“However, the Authority has just been ensuring compliance with procedures rather than challenging the nature or cost of proposed work”.

“The Authority must keep a much closer eye on the costs estimated by its licencees and not allow cost increases ‘on the nod’ simply because a licencees’ paperwork is in order”.

Mr Bacon was speaking as the Commons public accounts committee published its report into the work of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.  Between 2005 and 2007, estimates of decommissioning costs expected to be incurred by sites between April 2008 to March 2013 rose by 41 per cent.

However, the report finds that the Authority only reviews the process of estimating decommissioning costs by its site licensees, but not the details of costs themselves.
