Chancellor 'dragging his heels' over Olympics says MP

Mr Bacon has written to the police and car park operators to ask about their security arrangements
The report recommends that a robust lifetime budget for the Games be set and that it is made clear how this will be funded.

SOUTH NORFOLK MP Richard Bacon has called on Chancellor Gordon Brown not to ‘drag his heels’ over agreeing the final budget for the 2012 Olympics, as a new report calls on the government to finalise the Games’ funding package as a matter of urgency.

Mr Bacon was speaking as the National Audit Office (NAO) published its first report into the preparations for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The report recommends that a robust lifetime budget for the Games be set and that it is made clear how this will be funded.  The NAO states this will allow the programme to move forward with greater confidence.

Mr Bacon, a member of the Commons public accounts committee, said today:

“Preparations for the 2012 Olympic Games will be hindered without a clear idea of how much money is available and where it is coming from.  The government needs to be straight with the British public about how much the London Olympics will cost and who will be footing the bill”.

“The UK’s credibility as a major venue for sport is at stake and this is no time for the Chancellor to be dragging his heels”.
