South Norfolk MP Richard Bacon has paid tribute to the men and women who serve in the Reserve Armed Forces, as a new report finds that the MoD has created a successful volunteer culture but that Britain’s Reserve Forces need better training and support.

Mr Bacon, a member of the Commons public accounts committee who served in the Territorial Army, was speaking as the National Audit Office (NAO) published its report into Reserve Armed Forces.

The report finds that the MoD has successfully fostered a culture where Volunteer Reservists join out of a desire to be sent on operations but that not all Reservists train with the Regular units they are to be deployed with.

Mr Bacon said: “As a former member of the Territorial Army, I pay tribute to anyone who gives up spare time to serve as a member of our Reserve Armed Forces.  It is a significant commitment, particularly as Reservists are now often serving in complex and dangerous places such as Iraq”.

“I know how vital Volunteer Reservists are to the Armed Forces and they must be given the best possible training before being sent on operations.  Not all Reservists are trained with the Regular units they will serve with.  Such joint training is a common sense measure that can save lives in battle and I urge the MoD to make sure this happens for all Reservists”.
