Helping workless people will flush out shirkers, says MP

Many people in workless households have multiple barriers to work, but the government cannot say how many people choose to remain unemployed

South Norfolk MP Richard Bacon has called on the government to help unemployed people who genuinely want to work, in order to flush out those who are unemployed by choice.

Mr Bacon said: “To hit the government’s target of an 80 per cent employment rate, the Department for Work and Pensions will have to get 1.6 million economically inactive people into work”.

“However, the DWP does not know how many people are out of work by choice, rather than by chance”.

“Properly targeted help must be put in place for those who want to work.  Only then will the government be able to flush out the shirkers who are sticking up two fingers at hard-working families and treating the benefit system like a cash machine”.

Mr Bacon, MP for South Norfolk, was speaking as the Commons public accounts committee published its report on helping people from workless households into work.  The United Kingdom has an employment rate of 74 per cent, but to meet a government aspiration to reach an 80 per cent employment rate, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) must get 1.6 million economically inactive people into work.

Many people in workless households have multiple barriers to work including lack of skills, disability and caring responsibilities. The report finds that early intervention and targeted support is essential in order to help them back into work.  The report also finds that the DWP could not say what proportion of workless households chose not to work rather than being out of work due to personal circumstances.
