The data held on the mobile phones and memory stick is the only data that has been lost. The e-mails held on Blackberrys are deleted remotely as soon as they are reported missing. The memory sticks held a small number of files and there are no reports that this included sensitive or personal data.

Mr. Douglas Alexander: The Department for International Development (DFID) can confirm the following information:
(a) Equipment loss—Nine laptops were stolen during the period 2007-08. All DFID laptops have secure encryption technology and no data has been put at risk.
(b) The Department for International Development, in accordance with Cabinet Office guidance, did not report any personal data related incidents for the period 2007-08.

Nick Harvey: I refer the hon. Member to replies to the hon. Member for Torbay (Mr. Sanders) on 13 October 2008, Official Report, column 858W, and the hon. Member for Brent, East (Sarah Teather) on 19 February 2008, Official Report, column 545W. Since then it has been reported that 10 chairs were stolen from Portcullis House.
Mr. Sanders: To ask the hon. Member for North Devon, representing the House of Commons Commission how many articles have been reported stolen from the Palace of Westminster in the last 12 months; and what those items were. [225374]
Nick Harvey: From the latest statistical information collected, there were nine reported thefts from the Palace of Westminster in the last 12 months. Detailed information is given as follows:
One computer laptop;
One digital camera;
One set of golf clubs;
One pair of candlesticks; and
Five amounts of cash, all under £100.

Member for North Devon, representing the House of Commons Commission how many (a) mobile telephones, (b) personal digital assistants and (c) laptop computers issued to House of Commons staff were reported (i) lost, (ii) missing and (iii) stolen in each year since 2001. Nick Harvey: Records held on lost, missing or stolen mobile telephones, personal digital assistants and laptop computers are not differentiated between owners, i.e. Members or Members’ staff or House of Commons staff, nor between those issued by the House of Commons Service and those owned personally by Members or others. Mr. Wills: The Ministry of Justice has recorded nine significant personal data related incidents for 2007-08, published in its resource accounts and laid before the House on 21 July 2008.
There were five related equipment losses, comprising of four laptops and one electronic storage device.
I refer the hon. Member to the statement made by my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster on 25 June 2008, providing the final report on measures for data handling procedures in government.

Chris Bryant: In the last 12 months one laptop has been reported stolen from the Leader of the House of Commons Office. The laptop was used to update the office website and did not contain any personal data or other sensitive information. No data have been lost.

Maria Eagle: Since its establishment on 12 October 2007 the Government Equalities Office has lost one laptop. The laptop was new and unused and therefore did not contain any data. No other losses of data have been reported.

The table contains the losses for those parts of BERR which now form part of the Department for Energy and Climate Change.
Laptops belonging to BERR utilise full-hard disk encryption.
The Blackberry Handheld Devices also utilise full encryption. In addition when the loss is reported a "wipe" command is sent to the missing device.

The Department takes the security and protection of its assets very seriously. Its policy and procedures are constantly reviewed and cases of losses or thefts are investigated. As a further deterrent, the Department marks its portable equipment with an invisible forensic dye called Smartwater. The Department's Security Unit continues to raise security awareness and physical protection of information technology equipment among its staff.
The Department has recorded one personal data related incident in 2007-08 in its Resource Accounts published on 10 October 2008. This concerned the Medical Training Application Service website where personal details of some junior doctors were erroneously made available as a result of action taken by a third party managing data on the Department's behalf, contrary to the instructions on data handling issued to them by the Department.

Communities and Local Government
Grant Shapps: To ask the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government what (a) equipment and (b) data was lost by her Department in the last 12 months; and if she will make a statement. [231447]
Mr. Khan: The Department for Communities and Local Government, in accordance with Cabinet Office guidance did not report any personal or other data related incidents for the period 2007-8. No equipment containing data was recorded as lost in the same period.
This response does not include the Government Office for the English Regions which carry out work for 10 Government departments.

Mr. Hoon: The Department for Transport has recorded 27 personal data related incidents in 2007-08 in its resource accounts published in July 2008.
The equipment lost in relation to these incidents recorded was five laptop computers, five Blackberrys, one USB memory device, and one removable hard disk drive.
